About Me
Aprille McMahon
counselling and psychotherapy
I have spent over 35 years working alongside adolescents and their families across education, health, and counselling settings.
My professional background includes primary, secondary, and TAFE teaching roles in Australia and internationally. I have worked with students and families from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, including those for whom English is not their first language. I am a clinical nutritionist and counsellor, using a psychotherapy‑informed approach to support young people and their families to navigate life.
This breadth of experience has given me an understanding of the challenges young people face and the complexity families carry behind the scenes.
My Approach
I take an individualised, trauma-informed approach to adolescent counselling. Each young person brings their own personality and history, and I work to meet them where they are.
My style is calm, warm, and practical. I aim to build genuine connection while offering clear, useful support. I also support parents to feel understood and more confident in holding the bigger picture.
My practice is neuro-affirming, strengths-based, and LGBTQIA+ affirming.
A parent who understands family complexity
I am also a parent of young adults, and our family life has included its share of challenging times. I understand what it feels like to be worried, exhausted, and unsure what to do next. I know how hard it can be to support your young person while maintaining mutual respect, holding boundaries, navigating services, and trying to keep family life and yourself steady.
This lived experience shapes the way I work. I listen to young people and parents with care, honesty, and respect. I do not rush, assume, or judge.
Behind behaviour, there is often stress, pain, and confusion. My role is to help make sense of that, and to support meaningful change.
My hope is that when you read this, you feel a sense of: “Aprille will understand,” and “We don’t have to do this alone.”
